Retail sales

AlphaNinja - A slew of apparel retailers reported earnings, sales figures or both last night and this morning.

Same-store-sales ("comps") are sales at stores that have been open more than a year -->> so as to get an idea of "organic" sales, as opposed to contributions from newly opened stores.

Those stocks that beat expectations are ahead of those that missed by 1%. Keep in mind that these sales don't tell us what margins they were at. For example, at the Gap (GPS), there's been a renewed focus on full-price selling, so that while comps are down, profitability may actually be UP.
