Apparently the early advertising strategy was simple - SEXISM, SPORTSCARS AND MERGERS.

In addition to sexism, the suitcase-phone sellers like Radio Shack used massive nerds and "merger-mania" to sell their wares, complete with teenagers talking about insider trading!  Sweet!
